I have no doubt we are all aware that time is a unique resource. As I get older, I value my time more and more. I cannot buy more of it. All I can do is make the most of the time I have.
Time gone is gone. We cannot get it back. If I can show off a little and quote Drucker since he put it so well:
“Time is also a unique resource. One cannot rent, hire, buy, or otherwise obtain more time. The supply of time is totally inelastic. No matter how high the demand, the supply will not increase. There is not price for it and no marginal utility curve for it. Moreover, time is totally perishable and cannot be stored. Yesterday’s time is gone forever and will never come back. Time is, therefore, always in exceedingly short supply.”
More recently I was not at all happy with myself for not getting the things I wanted done. Till today, I have not sat down and thought about how I spend my time. A simple 10 minute look at my planned routine made me think.
I am trying to achieve too much and in the end not achieving much. The self help books I read fell into perspective. Brain Tracy’s Eat That Frog is one of the better books on time/life management. One aspect of this book that struck a chord with me is “One of the very worst uses of time is to do something very well that need not be done at all”.
We simply do not have the time to do all the things we want to do. This means we work on tasks that will help us achieve out key goals.
I knew all this. It has really hit me today since I looked at how much productive time I have in a day. It shocked me! I do not have as much time as I thought.
For those interested, my new planned routine below shows the result of my few minutes today spent on thinking about my time. It is the most valuable task I have accomplished today since it brought home to me – time is so valuable and so limited!
